There are 4 anatomy steeplechase exams conducted in my school
Histology, Embryology, Gross anatomy and Genetics
1) For genetic
Pictures of people with medical conditions would be placed down of which you have to name the condition and the possible cause(s)
2) Embryology
Various development stages of a foetus would be available which you will identify the stage of development and possible things that can go wrong at that stage which would not let the baby form
3) Histology
You have to look through the microscope and name the tissues you can see and where they can be found
4) Gross Anatomy
A part of the muscle would be pinned and numbered, you name the muscle and its innervation
Possible clinical correlation in that part as well
Basically, Steeplechase requires you moving🏁 from one desk to the next at timed intervals (usually 30-60Secs) identifying specimen’s displayed on the desk in front of you.
They’re two steeple chase exams in Anatomy;
1. Histology Steeplechase
2. Gross/Embryology Steeplechase
Histology Steeplechase may require you to use the microscope or slides may be projected to you on the board as the case maybe.
In histology, you would be required to identify slides using the microscope🔬. You may meet the slide fixed and set on the stage ready to be viewed, or you may meet it on the desk with the microscope beside it.
If that’s the case, you would have to set the slide, view it, and identify it within 30- 60seconds.
Personally, Histology steeplechase is my favorite
In the case of Gross/Embryology
Bodily parts of the cadaver (dead body) will be pinned/labelled for you to identify it. You’re expected to identify these structures within a timed intervals and give responses to the questions that may follow after you identify it.
The Gross Laboratory usually have models as well and they’re sometimes displayed in place of the cadavers. You can be asked to identify labelled parts of the models or the events occuring in the model displayed.
Also, for the Embryology
You may be asked to identify neonates who’ve been preserved in formalin. I once identified a neonate with a case of Spina bifida and associated abnormalities in a Steeplechase Exam.
That’s basically what Steeplechase is about
In my school(OAU)…for histology we use slides, both under the microscope and printed ones.
For the embro we use models
For gross we use cadaver, model and bones.
15seconds on one question and some questions can have a and b.
They ring a bell for the change over and if you touch the cadaver or model. You are out
For anatomy, our steeplechase is 60 seconds and immediately after 60 seconds, a bell will be rang to change station.
Its divided into 3
Histology: projected at times, and microscopic at times
Embryology: pictures are placed to identify what’s in it.
Gross anatomy: cadavers are placed on the table with some part of it pinned or ties with rope.
For physiology, it’s 3 minutes per question and there are 5 main questions with a lot of subquestions
But, trust me the three minutes are not always enough.
Identify apparatus, experiments they are used for, principles of the experiment, sometimes, they ask us to even write some procedures….
Those questions are 🤦♂️🤦♂️🤦♂️
Medical Laboratory in UNN takes only HISTOLOGY steeple-chase in 3rd year.
We’re invited into the Histology Lab, and made to sit 6ft apart sideways. The projector screen is quite standard, and it’s distance to the last chair behind should be about 20ft so one can still see clearly from the last chair.
We’re given a leaf of standard exam paper and instructed to rule a margin, with a two columed table. A and B titled. And numbering 1-15 (15 questions in my set) for the margins.
Before starting, the invigilators ask for those with eye defects or those who cannot see clearly from their position. They are made to come to the front, very close to the screen, and sparcely spaced. A demo is shown, so students can see how questions look like. In the demo, a slide is shown, with an A and B question. It’s a 15 minute exam, and each slide (without slide numbers) is displayed for a minute only. (Pre-programmed). If you miss a slide number, you can as well say goodbye to passing the rest.
We were tested on identification of slides or pointed arrows, reason and function.

Reproductive system etc..
